Sometimes life doesn’t go where we planned.
Sometimes the road ahead narrows, we have to change direction, and suddenly we’re travelling somewhere we never expected.
Rather than resisting those unexpected detours, this lighthouse celebrates them.
It celebrates resilience.
Hope.
Joy.
The light we discover when we choose to keep moving forwards.
As The Beautiful Mind Artist, my work has always explored the stories we tell ourselves. The affirmations we choose. The kindness we show ourselves when life feels heavy. The quiet reminder that even when things feel dark, there is always light somewhere on the horizon.
A lighthouse doesn’t stop the storm.
It simply reminds us where home is.
Sometimes we become that guiding light for someone else.
Sometimes we need somebody else’s light to help guide us.
Both are equally beautiful.
Inspired by an unexpected Beatles story…
One of my favourite stories is from 1967, when The Beatles unexpectedly arrived in Plymouth after their coach had to take a diversion because a bridge on their planned route couldn’t be crossed.
An unexpected detour.
A completely different destination.
Yet decades later, people are still telling that story.
That became the inspiration behind this sculpture.
Life rarely follows the map we draw.
Sometimes the scenic route becomes the most meaningful journey of all.
Becoming one of the band…
Creating this sculpture gave me permission to play.
To imagine.
To become one of the Beatles.
My bandmates?
• a Jeff Koons-inspired balloon dog
• a wonderfully vintage 1920s Popeye
• a unicorn playing guitar…
…because art doesn’t need permission to make sense.
Sometimes the process of creating something joyful is even more meaningful than the finished piece itself.

You’ll find Shine On, Beautiful Mind! on Plymouth Hoe, just along the promenade from Smeaton’s Tower and beside the famous Beatles statues overlooking Plymouth Sound.

Own a little piece of the lighthouse
Although the sculpture itself is being auctioned for St Luke’s Hospice later this year, a collection of signed limited-edition prints inspired by details from the lighthouse are available.
Each print captures a different part of the story and helps keep the spirit of the project shining long after the exhibition has finished.

The auction
The original sculpture will be auctioned in October 2026 in support of St Luke’s Hospice.
Before the auction, it will also receive a ValueBond digital identity, allowing its story, provenance and journey to continue with its future owner.
